In line with the NZ Government's initiative of Managing for Outcomes, Public Health South's strategic planning identified five high level outcomes. These outcomes will be  achieved by focusing our planning, delivery and performance on a "vital few" key areas of improvement. These priorities are aligned with the strategic plans of Otago  and Southland DHBs, and with health sector priorities for our priority population groups as shown below.

 PHS Service Delivery Teams and  Intermediate Outcomes  

Public health staff have been structured into three teams. Each team has a programme of work with  outcomes that can be achieved in the short to medium term, that will contribute to the long term outcomes.

Decreased obesogenic environments Effective internal systems to investogate and manage disease outbreaks Early Childhood Centres are safe physical and social environments

Increased breastfeeding rates Reduced incidence and impact of blood-borne viral infections among injecting drug users Lawful, hygienic and dignified disposal of the dead
Licensed premises minimise alcohol related harm through compliance with the Sale of Liquor Act Effective drinking water programme to reduce enteric disease The health and wellbeing of our environment is improved and protected

Teams are multi-disciplinary, and maximise opportunities to combine the skills of different professional groups, such as health promotion advisers, health protection officers, team leaders and adminiistrative support. All three teams work across the Otago and Southland regions.
