Waterborne Illnesses
We are responsible for investigating individual cases of water borne and suspected water borne illness outbreaks. These include diseases such as Giardia, Cryptosporidiosis and Legionellosis.
When notified of a case, PHS will undertake a telephone interview to find out about:
- any exposures to contaminated recreational water such as swimming pools, spa pools, beaches or streams
- any exposures to contaminated drinking water supplies such as untreated roof collected supplies or inadequately maintained household hot water systems.
We also provides advice and information on how to maintain safe household drinking water. If an outbreak of water borne disease is linked to a Local Authority supply, self supplied premises or community supply, we will work with the supplier to identify the cause and to ensure that a safe drinking water supply is available.
